If you want to get control of your weight for the long term, you’ll definitely need a good eating routine. That means a regular breakfast, lunch and evening dinner, with no or a minimum amount of snacks in between.
All parents will tell you that one of the most important things for a new baby is to get it into a “routine” specially for sleeping and eating, so it’s a shame we tend to lose both as we get older! If you are one of those people who eat food “whenever”, maybe it’s time to rein those habits in and get back to the baby routine! This is particularly true if you regularly miss meals and eat late.
Recent research across 1000 slimmers said that sticking to defined meal times was essential for losing weight, whilst 76% said that breakfast was the most important meal and eating it daily had helped them to cut calories. Optimum times are between 7am and 7.30am for breakfast, 12.15 and 12.45 for lunch and 6pm and 6.30pm for dinner.
I always encourage people to also try and match meal sizes to activity levels…so don’t eat a big meal and then sit down for a few hours (or even worse, eat just before you go to bed). That’s difficult advice to follow because most of us have our main meal in the evening. However, try and ensure that you have a good breakfast (unprocessed cereal such as shredded wheat or porridge with some fruit and skimmed milk, or a boiled egg with wholegrain toast), followed by a balanced lunch and dinner before 7pm – giving your body time to digest it before you go to bed. If you can take a brisk walk or other activity in the evening, then so much the better.
Whatever you do, don’t take snacks onto the sofa with you after dinner! Have a fruit tea and a small handful of nuts instead if you still feel hungry (and check that you REALLY feel hungry…this is probably a habit eat rather than a requirement eat). You might think this will take all the pleasure out of life, but it won’t! You’ll be amazed at how quickly your body will respond and your mind follows, particularly as you see the new strategy working and the weight coming down.
Remember the old mantra: Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper and you won’t go far wrong!
